View south along the east-facing slopes of the Hart Mountain ridgeline with Warner Peak (8017') the high point at center left, Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge...........June 9, 2016. Photo taken from Barnhardi Road about one and one-half miles uphill from Hot Springs Campground.

Directions: From Hot Springs Campground, follow Barnhardi Road west from the vault toilet near the junction of the spur road up Bond Creek, crossing to the north side of Rock Creek via a wooden vehicle bridge, then passing the western most vault toilet. After about one-third of a mile, the road reaches a locked gate. Pass through, cross a small side stream and continue southwest along wetlands. The road turns west and climbs along a stream to a long aspen grove which it passes through. The road then turns south, becomes rougher and climbs much more steeply to an open, rocky bald filled with wildflowers that is more level and has decent views all around. The jeep road soon comes to a junction. Continuing straight you soon proceed downhill to the marshes of Barnhardi Basin, and one can continue trending south-southwest to Blue Sky.

For this hike, we turned west (right) and continued uphill through grassy meadows and sagebrush slopes eventually climbing to the flatter plateau atop the ridgeline of Hart Mountain, with views downhill into the upper part of North Fork Degarmo canyon, and eastwards from Poker Jim Ridge to the Steens Mt., Beatty's Butte, the Pueblo and Trouth Creek Mountains and some of the high peaks in northwest Nevada. Continue west along the ridge for a view out over Warner Valley.

Weather: Temperatures in the low to mid 50s around noon time with light winds and partly cloudy skies.
