The Canyon Mt. Trail Road is now open to the trailhead. Although recently improved, the road currently has large swales (reminiscent of giant washboards) that are hazardous to low-slung vehicles and make your auto feel like a bucking and careening bronco. Hopefully the county road crew will get up there to blade and smooth out the road. Also keep a watch out for ATVs, 4WD vehicles, and dirt bikes speeding down the road or crossing the road via the numerous trails that criss-cross the route. The trail is free of snow at least through the first 2.5 miles (to the second creek crossing). Snow is melting fast here and this should cease to be a problem by mid-June.

The upper left photo shows a view towards Canyon Mountain as seen from the trail about one quarter mile above the trailhead. Our trail explorations ended at the bald in the distance at left, about 2.5 miles away. The photo at upper right shows a view north across the John Day Valley from the same location. The middle left photo shows a view west towards the eastern end of the Aldrich Mts. with many few-flowered shooting stars in the foreground. The photo at middle right shows a view from a rocky point about 2.5 miles uphill from the trailhead up towards snow-covered Canyon Mt. The trail continues to the draw in the foreground, crosses a small creek, then continues to the left through conifer forest below the peaks. The lower-most photo shows a view northeast across the upper John Day Valley towards the Greenhorn Mts on the skyline at left, Dixie Butte at center and the snowy peaks of the Elkhorn Mts on the horizon at right. Taken at the same location from the previous photo.
