Beach at Klickitat Springs.......April 12, 2011. - View SW down the Klickitat River towards the town of Klickitat, WA.......April 12, 2011. The old ice plant is on the far side of the river at right.

The photo at left shows a view downslope to the gravel beach at Klickitat Springs. The Klickitat Trail runs along the base of the hill on this side of the river. There is no bridge crossing of the river downstream about one mile, so this is an out and back adventure of about 4 miles total length. Washington Highway 142 runs just above river level on the far side of the river. Above it is the Company Road, the old logging road which was used to bring logs back to the old mill at Klickitat. It is closed to vehicle traffic but can be hiked or biked, although the paved road is washed out at Wahkiacus Canyon and must be forded. The photo at right shows a view downriver from Klickitat Springs towards the town of Klickitat. The springs in this area are carbonated and were used before most of us could afford refrigerators (after WWII) to help create ice. One of the old ice buildings can be seen across the river in the photo at right. Both photos were taken on April 12, 2011. The slopes along most of the length of the Klickitat River should be ablaze with numerous blooming balsamroots, lupines, desert parsleys (Columbia desert parsley: Lomatium columbianum is seen in the photos here.), milkvetches, puccoon and other spring wildflowers within about 2 weeks if the weather ever warms up!
