[Wildflower Bloom in Central and Eastern Washington: 2009]

Wildflower Bloom in Central and Eastern Washington

July 25, 2009

Trail #1372 and Howard Creek from Road 3530 to Trail #1373

Wenatchee National Forest

A Washington Rare Plant Care and Conservation Program hike.

Pika hay pile along Howard Creek, Wenatchee N.F.............July 25, 2009.

A close-up of a pika hay stack at the base of talus slopes along Howard Creek, Wenatchee N.F...................July 25, 2009. The pike collects fresh plants, piles them on rocks in the talus areas it lives in, then waits several days for the plants to dry and cure. The dried plants are then stashed underground for use by the pika (which stays active all winterlong in its rocky tunnels under the snow) during the winter.

This route took us through coniferous forest and open sagebrush as well as talus slopes along Howard Creek to where Trail #1373 crosses Howard Creek. This was part of a loop hike involving trails #1372, #1373 and #1381 as well as FS Road #3530.
