A view east from Juniper Peak to Mount Adams, Gifford Pinchot National Forest........September 13, 2014.

Access to our starting point was via Road 2904. Drive south from Randle, WA crossing the Cowlitz River for about one mile before turning left (east) onto FS Road 23. In 9 miles turn right onto FS Road #28. After a mile stay straight onto FS Road #29 which becomes gravel. After 4 more miles, turn left uphill onto FS Road #2904 which climbs fairly steeply. After 4 more miles you reach Lambert Saddle, the trailhead for both the Juniper Ridge Trail #261 and Tongue Mountain Trail # 294 and Juniper Ridge Trail #261. As of September 2014, Road #2904 is easily passible via regular passenger vehicles although there are a number of high ridges across the road to deflect water to the side that one should drive carefully over.

Juniper Peak is a good lunch destination for this hike, as it is about 3 miles uphill from the trailhead (with about 1500' elevation gain), although fast hikers could continue south along the ridge to Sunrise Peak in another two miles or so. The trail is deeply rutted from use of motorbikes and is steep in places, so that should be a consideration when choosing this hike. "Best Wildflower Hikes: Washington" by Art Kruckeberg is a good guide for flower trails in this region, although currently some roads may be closed due to washouts.

Note also that this area is heavily used by motorbikes on weekends and hunters from the first of September on.
