This photo shows a view south over the drying sedge meadows of Swampy Meadows on August 11, 2008. At this point in the season, the water depth in the shallow parts of the meadows is to mid-calf with the deeper portions to mid-thigh. Some areas are very muddy (quick-mud) where one could find oneself in water up to shoulder depth (at least).

The study area includes the roadside along Forest Road #23 as well as the moist forest to the west of the road as well as Swampy Meadows itself.
