The photo above shows a close-up of the upper inflorescence of bladder sedge as seen in standing water at Swampy Meadows on the western slopes of Mt. Adams..........August 11, 2008. In this inflorescence the upper spike at upper right is male, while the lower one is a mix of male (on top) and female. Several other female spikes could be found on this indvidual below the ones pictured here.

The photo above shows a close-up of the perigynia and striped scales of bladder sedge as seen in standing water at Swampy Meadows on the western slopes of Mt. Adams..........August 11, 2008. The perigynia of bladder sedge are more tapered at the base and typically have a shorter, thicker beak than the similar inflated sedge (Carex vesicaria) which has a broader, rounded base and narrower beak.
