Sunrise Peak from the Sunrise Peak Trail #262, Gifford Pinchot National Forest........September 12, 2014.

Access to our starting point was via Road 2324 and 2324-063. Drive south from Randle, WA crossing the Cowlitz River for about one mile before turning left (east) onto FS Road 23. In 19 miles, pass the junction with FS Road 21, staying straight on still paved FS Road 23 for another 4.6 miles. Turn Right onto FS Road 2324 and continue for 4.3 miles where you will turn right at an unsigned junction. In another mile, you will come to signed junction with FS Road 2324-063. Regular passenger vehicles may have trouble climbing up the loose gravel for the first 100 meters of this road, so park uphill past the junction and walk uphill to the trailhead. Otherwise, 4wd andAWD vehicles should be able to drive the short Road 2324-063 to the trailhead where there is room for about 5 vehicles.

The Sunrise Peak Trail #262 climbs steadily for about a mile to the junction with Trail 262A which gives access to Sunrise Peak and also the Juniper Ridge Trail #261. If you hike straight at this junction, you will eventually encounter Jumbo Peak and further on, the Boundary Trail #1 in the heart of the Dark Divide. "Best Wildflower Hikes: Washington" by Art Kruckeberg is a good guide for flower trails in this region, although currently some roads may be closed due to washouts.

Note also that this area is heavily used by motorbikes on weekends and hunters from the first of September on.
