Columbia River Gorge

Wildflower bloom at several sites to the east of Hood River, OR & White Salmon, WA.

February 5, 2005

The Dalles Mt. Buttercup: Ranunculus reconditis
* indicates the wildflower is blooming.

Governor Tom McCall Nature Preserve (Nature Conservancy)

*1. Grass Widow: Sisyrinchium douglasii var. douglasii -Moderate bloom, probably peeking in 7-10 days at the lower elevations.

*2. Salt & Pepper or Piper's Desert Parsley: Lomatium piperi -Numerous bloom.

*3. Columbia Desert Parsley: Lomatium columbianum -Numerous plants, mostly flowers with leaves just beginning to poke out.


Old Highway About 1 Mile South of Entrance to Discovery Center (& about 0.1 mile north of rock pit/gunnery range)

1. Spring Whitlow-grass: Draba verna var. boerhaavii - Numerous leaves but no flowers yet.

2. Smooth Prairie Star: Lithophragma glabra - Numerous leaves, no flowers yet.

3. Northwestern Saxifrage: Saxifraga integrifolia var. integrifolia - Numerous leaves, no flowers yet.

*4. Columbia Desert Parsley: Lomatium columbianum - One plant, mostly flowers with leaves just beginning to poke out.

*5. Pungent Desert Parsley: Lomatium grayi - Five or six plants along road with a few small, yellow umbels and some greenish leaves.


East Bank of the Deschutes River

1. Thick-leaf Thelypody: Thelypodium laciniatum var. laciniatum - A number of clusters of basal leaves on roadbed cuts along the old rail bed.

2. Prairie Stars: probably both Lithophragma glabra and Lithophragma parviflora - Numerous leaves.

3. Northwestern Saxifrage: Saxifraga integrifolia var. integrifolia - Numerous leaves, no flowers yet.

4. Lupine: Lupinus sp. - Numerous lupine sprouts, cotyledon stage.

*5. Filaree: Erodium cicutarium - Numerous bloom along the old rail bed.

*6. Pungent Desert Parsley: Lomatium grayi - Several plants with a few small, yellow umbels and some greenish leaves at higher elevations.

*7. Salt & Pepper or Piper's Desert Parsley: Lomatium piperi - Numerous bloom on higher slopes.

8. Varileaf Phacelia: Phacelia heterophylla - Nice basal leaf clusters.

9. Low Pussytoes: Antennaria dimorpha - Mats of low, leafy stems only.

10. Hoary False Yarrow: Chaenactis douglasii - Numerous small plants, months from bloom.

Animals Seen: Dark-eyed Juncos, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Canyon Wrens, Crows, Ravens, Coot, Buffleheads, Common Mergansers, Double-crested Mergansers, Canada Geese, Great Blue Heron, California Ground Squirrel.


Horsethief Butte (trail along western and southwestern edge)

*1. Grass Widow: Sisyrinchium douglasii var. inflatum - A few in bloom.

2. Spring Whitlow-grass: Draba verna var. boerhaavii - Numerous leaves but no flowers yet.

3. Lupine: Lupinus sp. - A fair amount of clusters of basal leaves appearing.

*4. Filaree: Erodium cicutarium -

*5. Salt & Pepper or Piper's Desert Parsley: Lomatium piperi - Numerous bloom on higher slopes.

6. Low Pussytoes: Antennaria dimorpha - Mats of low, leafy stems only.

8. Gold Stars: Crocidium multicaule - Numerous plants with basal leaves only.

9. Thread-leaf Fleabane: Erigeron filifolius - Numerous plants, probably a month or so until bloom.


Summit of the Columbia Hills

*1. Grass Widow: Sisyrinchium douglasii var. inflatum - A few in bloom.

2. Upland Larkspur: Delphinium nuttallianum - Several plants, each with one to several leaves but too early yet for flowers.

*3. Dalles Mt. Buttercup: Ranunculus reconditus - Good bloom, perhaps 500 plants in bloom in several locations.

*4. Spring Whitlow-grass: Draba verna var. boerhaavii - A few in bloom.

*5. Filaree: Erodium cicutarium - A few in bloom.

*6. Canby's Desert Parsley: Lomatium canbyi - Numerous (some with ochre flowers).

*7. Gorman's Desert Parsley: Lomatium gormanii -

8. Biscuit Root: Lomatium macrocarpum - Leaves only, one plant.

9. Bare-stem Desert Parsley: Lomatium nudicaule - Leaves only, one plant.

*10. Salt & Pepper or Piper's Desert Parsley: Lomatium piperi - Numerous bloom.

11. Nine-leaf Desert Parsley: Lomatium triternatum - Leaves only, one plant.

Animals Seen: Horned Lark, Meadow Lark, Red-tailed Hawks, Golden Eagle


Three Bench Loop (Access to Lower Bench at East End of Doug's Beach)

*1. Yellow Bells: Fritillaria pudica - Several buds within a day or two of blooming at lower elevations.

2. Panicled Death Camas: Zigadenus paniculatus - Numerous leaves 3-5 cm high.

*3. Grass Widow: Sisyrinchium douglasii var. douglasii - Sparse bloom, probably peeking in two weeks or so at the lower elevations.

*4. Smooth Prairie Star: Lithophragma glabra - Several beginning to bloom.

5. Northwestern Saxifrage: Saxifraga integrifolia var. integrifolia - Numerous leaves.

*6. Salt & Pepper or Piper's Desert Parsley: Lomatium piperi - Numerous bloom.

Animals Seen: Kestrel, Rock Dove, Pheasant


Catherine Creek

*1. Grass Widow: Sisyrinchium douglasii var. douglasii -Sparse bloom, probably peeking in 2 weeks or so at the lower elevations.

2. Bitterroot: Lewisia rediviva - Numerous leaves. About 8-10 weeks from bloom.

3. Northwestern Saxifrage: Saxifraga integrifolia var. integrifolia - Leaves only.

4. Western Saxifrage: Saxifraga occidentalis - A few with flower buds emerging.

*5. Salt & Pepper or Piper's Desert Parsley: Lomatium piperi - Numerous bloom.

6. Bachelor's Button: Centaurea cyanus - One plant in bud (the rays beginning to emerge).

Animals Seen: Black-capped Chickadees, Mt. Chickadee, Scrub Jay, American Robin, Starling, Mourning Dove, Red-tailed Hawks.
