Wildflower Bloom in the Columbia River Gorge

WA Highway 14 to the East of US Highway 97

August 22 , 2007

The photo above shows hoary aster as seen in sandy soils east of US Highway 97 along Washington State Road 14................August 22, 2007.

* 1. Tall Buckwheat: Eriogonum elatum - Seen from near Horsethief Lake and westward.

* 2. Strict Buckwheat: Eriogonum strictum subspecies proliferum var. proliferum - (Some of this could be snow buckwheat, Eriogonum niveum).........I didn't stop to ID each plant, and they look similar at 65 mph.

* 3. California Poppy: Eschscholzia californica - Seen near Horsethief Lake.

* 4. Yellow Bee Plant: Cleome lutea - Plants on dry slopes are long past bloom, those in moist areas are still at full bloom (blooming generally east of Roosevelt, WA).

* 5. Lupine: Either Velvet X Silky Lupine Hybrid (Lupinus leucophyllus X sericeus) or Velvet Lupine (Lupinus leucophyllus) - A few plants still blooming between Wishram and US 197.

* 6. Puncture-vine: Tribulus terrestris - Seen in full bloom at Crow Butte in the far eastern gorge.

* 7. Turkey-mullein: Eremocarpus setigerus - Blooming on dry rocky slopes east of Rock Creek.

* 8. Blazing Star: Mentzelia laevicaulis var. laevicaulis - Past peak bloom.

* 9. Purple Loosestrife: Lythrum salicaria - In bloom in wetlands around Crow Butte in the far eastern gorge.

* 10. Tall Annual Willow Herb: Epilobium brachycarpum (formerly Epilobium paniculatum var. jucundum) - Blooming at Horsethief Butte.

* 11. Wild Carrot, Queen Anne's Lace: Daucus carota - In bloom near Crow Butte in the far eastern gorge.

* 12. Northern Wormwood: Artemisia campestris var. scouleriana -

13. Big Sagebrush: Artemisia tridentata - Not in bloom yet.

* 14. Hairy Goldaster: Chrysopsis villosa -

* 15. Gray Rabbit-brush: Ericameria nauseosa (formerly Chrysothamnus nauseosus) - Beginning to bloom.

* 16. Low Gumweed: Grindelia nana var. integrifolia - Seen roadside between Roosevelt, WA and Crow Butte in the far eastern gorge.

* 17. Match Brush: Gutierrezia sarothrae: Beginning to bloom east of Wishram, WA.

* 18. Common Sunflower: Helianthus annuus - Scattered along the length of SR-14, and locally abundant.

* 19. Hoary Aster: Macheranthera canescens var. incana -

* 20. Western Goldenrod: Solidago occidentalis - Seen in wetlands at Crow Butte in the far eastern gorge.

* 21. Sow-thistle: Sonchus sp. - Blooming in moist areas around Crow Butte in the far eastern gorge. Sorry, but I didn't stop to check the ID on this.
