Habitat:
Moist, open areas, forest edges, streamsides.
Characteristics:
1. Large shrub to small trees. (to 30 ft.).
2. Thorns to 1 inch long.
3. Leaves alternate on stem, are narrowly to widely oval -shaped, with saw-
toothed edges.
4. Flowers white, 5 petals, in clusters. Fruit are small, purple apple-like
fruits.
Uses or Importances:
1. Fruits eaten fresh or dried. Squirrels and birds also like the fruit!
2. Ornamental tree for yards.
3. Bark used to treat VD, strengthen heart, reduse swelling.
4. Thorns used as fish hooks, to pierce ears. Wood for tool handles.
