#42. Elk (Wapiti)
Group Name:
Mammals-Ungulates (even-toed hoofed mammals) or Deer Family
Habitat:
Elk live in meadows, forests edges, and grasslands. They are frequently seen in the wooded outskirts of towns or cities.
Traits:
1. Large bodied deer (to 9 ft tall) with dark reddish-brown fur & creamy rump patch.
2. The neck and head are a darker brown color.
3. Large, two-toed hooves.
4. Males have large bony antlers which are shed during the winter. These are used in mating battles and attracting mates.
5. The females have no antlers.
6. The sexes usually live in separate herds except during the fall matings season.
