Striped Skunk

#41. Striped Skunk

Mammals/Weasel Family



Habitat:

Open forests, farmland, brushy areas, often near water.


Traits:

1. Black fur with white neck that splits to form 1 or 2 stripes down the back.

2. White stripe on forehead between the eyes.

3. Bushy tail with white stripe.

4. Body size is similar to that of a small house cat.

5. Skunks have two scent glands. It arches its back & raises its tail to release its defensive odor. An antidote to the smell is tomato juice, although other chemical remedies are available from outdoor stores.

6. Skunks are active nightly (nocturnal) and are omnivorous (They eat both plants & animals.).
