Temperate Grasslands

(Click photo for closer view.) The photo above shows a typical view of grasslands which are beginning to dry out during the middle of the dry season. Photographed at Zumwalt Prairie in northeastern Oregon.

Vegetation Characteristics:

Temperate grasslands are found between the tropical and polar regions on earth. The dominant vegetation consists of tall perennial grasses and wildflowers. Typically, trees are limited to lining streams within this region.

Rainfall:

Average Monthly Rainfall Range: 50-150 mm

Temperate grasslands usually have definite dry and rainy seasons.

Temperature:

Average Monthly Temperature Range: 5-30 C.

Temperatures in the grasslands tend to be fairly cold during the winter and fairly warm during the summer.

Threats to the Temperate Grasslands:

1) Conversion of grasslands to farmland, or currently to city dwellings.

The photo above shows wildflower-filled grasslands in the Columbia River Gorge of Washington and Oregon. The grasslands of this region are full of wildflowers for a short period during the moist spring.
