Wildflowers Blooming Along Trails Between Catherine Creek and Coyote Wall (and the Labyrinth too!)

Weather: Mostly sunny with thin high clouds, very light wind, temperatures in the mid 50s.

* Grass Widow: Olsynium douglasii var. douglasii - Several dozen in various stages of blooming along the paved paths below the parking area at Catherine Creek. A few others beginning to bloom on the grassy lower slopes between Coyote Wall and the Labyrinth.

Bitterroot: Lewisia rediviva - Numerous rosettes of basal leaves. This won't bloom dependably here until mid to late April.

* Smooth Prairie Stars: Lithophragma glabrum - Single plant seen in bloom on the grassy lower slopes between Coyote Wall and the Labyrinth.

Rusty-hair Saxifrage: Micranthes rufidula - Some plants with flower buds along the paved path below the Catherine Creek parking lot.

Native Rose: Rosa sp. - New leaves unfurling with the sunny, warm weather.

* Gorman's Salt and Pepper: Lomatium gormanii

* Klickitat Desert Parsley: Lomatium klickitatense

* Butterfly-loving Desert Parsley: Lomatium papilioniferum

* Salt and Pepper: Lomatium piperi - Numerous plants seen in bloom on the grassy lower slopes between Coyote Wall and the Labyrinth.


Animals Seen:

Numerous hikers: Homo sapiens var. hikerus poopedus

Numerous mountain bikers: Biccicleta montanus var. mucho muckus

Numerous dogs: Canus domesticus var. all off-leashius

Numerous bald eagles (both adult and juvenile)

Red-tailed hawks

Kestrel

Northern flicker

Downy woodpecker

Hairy woodpecker ?

Western Meadowlarks - singing and swarming in groups to feed across the ground

Western bluebirds

Dark-eyed juncos

Ruby-crowned kinglets ? (viewed from long distance)

Pond frogs croaking (small bullfrog species?)

Pacific tree frogs singing their lil' hearts out in search of a mate

Small insects flying in the air

Domestic honey bees swarming around an opening at the base of a large oak.

Carniverous ground beetle

Small moths
