#31. American or Small Speedwell

Veronica americana

The flowers of speedwell are said to be irregular because they are of different sizes and shapes (note the bottom petal is smallest!). In addtion, the stamens (the look like insect antennas) are often bent.

Habitat:

Along streams, in ditches or wetlands.


Characteristics:

1. Opposite toothed leaves on round fleshy stems.

2. Blue flower racemes born in leaf axils. Blooms May through summer.


Uses:

1. Stems, flowers, and leaves can be eaten in salads.
