#40. Large-leaf Avens

Geum macrophyllum

Large-leaf avens can be identified from field buttercup becuase the buttercup has larger, very shiny flower petals while those of the avens are smaller, rounder (with space between them) and less shiny petals.

Habitat:

Moist woods and forest openings


Characteristics:

1. Bright yellow 5-petaled flowers resemble buttercups but lack the varnished look. Bloom period from April through October.

2. Basal leaves are pinnately compound, stem leaves are deeply parted. Grows to 30 inches tall.

3. Hooked seeds use passers by for spreading.


Uses:

1. Roots have been boiled to a tea for stomach ailments.

2. Pretty forest wildflower.
