#59. California Ground Squirrel

Habitat:

Grassy areas to places with mixed grass and shrubs.

Traits:

1. Brownish-gray fur with white spots on rump.

2. Name of neck is silver-gray.

3. Long tail is bushy, but not as thick as that of the gray tree squirrel.

4. It may climb trees to find food, but prefers to live underground.

5. Bad farm pest. They also carry plague fleas (bad medieval disease).

6. Active spring & fall ("sleeps" summer & winter).
