Habitat:

Mixed forests, orchards, backyards (especially winter)

Traits:

1. White patch on black back.

2. Black wings & tail.

3. Small beak.

4. cling to sides of trees & tap holes into bark to search out insects.

5. Length to 7 in.

6. Hairy woodpecker is similar but larger.
