#4. Iodine is used to indicate the presence of starch in a substance by turning from orange to black (or purple).

During an experiment, iodine is dropped into distilled water with the resulting solution staying orange.

This test is an example of a negative control because we are using water so we can see what a negative reaction (where we use a solution lacking starch) would look like.
