[First Review of Enzyme Reactions]

17. When there is a constant amount of enzyme and the substrate concentration is increased, why does the reaction rate eventually level off?

A) The enzymes become denatured at high substrate concentrations so the reaction rate decreases eventually to zero.

B) The enzymes are lazy and don't work fast enough to keep up with the increased amount of substrate.

C) All the enzymes are working at their maximum rate, so some of the substrate has to wait there turn.
