19. Because the membrane is a fluid, it is able to change shape,
break and reform during endocytosis and exocytosis. The phospholipid molecules
and their associated proteins float freely within the membrane. Because they
are not held rigidly within the membrane, the membrane (with the guidance of
contractile proteins within the cytoskeleton) can be manipulated so that its
shape is changed!
