31. The kind of communication that is occurring between the
cells below is known as synaptic communication. Briefly, a nerve impulse has
traveled down the neuron and reached the synapse (gap between 2 neurons). In
order to "jump" the synapse, the neuron at left secretes a neurotransmitter
via exocytosis which then diffuses across the synapse to attach to target areas
on the target neuron so that the "message" may be passed on.
