The Genus Navarretia

Least navarretia (Navarretia leucocephala) from Hunter Prairie, northeast of Bear Springs Ranger Station, just east of the Mt. Hood N.F. Boundary & 1/4 mile south of the White River.........May 28, 1994.

Smooth-leaved Gilia: Navarretia capillaris (Synonym: Gilia capillaris)

Divaricate Navarretia, Mountain Navarretia: Navarretia divaricata spp. divaricata (Synonym: Navarretia divaricata) - Corolla lobes with 3 thin veins that originate well down in the tube. 3 stigmas atop the style. Terminal segment of leaf noticeably elongated. Plants often freely and widely branched, the branches arising from just beneath or within the heads. Corolla 3.5-5 mm long. Branches of the bracts palmatifid. Filaments shorter than the anthers.

Needleleaf Navarretia, Needle-leaf Navarretia: Navarretia intertexta ssp. intertexta (Synonyms: Navarretia intertexta var. intertexta, Navarretia minima var. intertexta) - Corolla lobe with 1 thin vein that branches into several smaller veins above the base of the lobe. 2 stigmas atop the style. Corolla lobes generally slightly longer than up to 1.5 times longer than wide. Corolla measures 7-11 mm long, generally greater than the calyx. Inflorescence noticeably hairy.

Near Navarretia, Needle-leaf Navarretia: Navarretia intertexta ssp. propinqua (Synonyms: Gilia propinqua, Navarretia intertexta var. propinqua, Navarretia propinqua) - Corolla lobe with 1 thin vein that branches into several smaller veins above the base of the lobe. 2 stigmas atop the style. Corolla lobes generally slightly longer than up to 1.5 times longer than wide. Corolla measures 4-7 mm long, equal or less than the calyx. Inflorescence less hairy than var. intertexta.

Least Navarretia: Navarretia leucocephala ssp. minima (Synonym: Navarretia minima) - Found in vernal pools on the flatlands on the north side of the Columbia Hills.

White-flowered Navarretia: Navarretia leucocephala ssp. leucocephala - Unverified for the Columbia River Gorge.

Skunkbush, Skunkweed: Navarretia squarrosa (Synonym: Gilia squarrosa) - Corolla lobes with 3 thin veins that originate well down in the tube. 3 stigmas atop the style. Terminal segment of leaves not elongated. Corolla 9-12 mm long, deep to pale blue. Plants erect, with single stem or moderately branched.

Marigold Navarretia, Marigold Pincushion-plant, Northern Navarretia: Navarretia tagetina - Corolla lobes with 3 thin veins that originate well down in the tube. 3 stigmas atop the style. Corolla 7-11 mm long. Plants often freely and widely branched, the branches arising well below the heads. Corolla 8-11 mm long. Branches of the bracts pinnatifid. Filaments much greater than the anthers.
