California Rhododendron, Pacific Rhododendron, Western Rhododendron: Rhododendron macrophyllum (Synonym: Rhododendron californicum) - An attractive shrub typically 1-3 meters high, but occasionally up to 7 meters high. The leaves are evergreen, alternately arranged on the ends of the branches, elliptic to lanceolate and acute at both ends or obtuse at the base. The margins are entire with the blades glabrous and dark green above and paler green with short hairs below. The flowers are in compact terminal clusters. The bell-shaped or funnel-shaped corolla is 3-4 cm across, slightly irregular and is rose-colored with darker spots inside the uper lobes. The style and 10 stamens are each curved.
