Note the narrow, terminal male spike with several short, cylindrical, lateral female spikes. The glabrous perigynia are inflated, elliptical to obovate in shape with 3 stigmas (observable in the photo at right). The perigynia begin green in color but dry to a yellow or orange-brown.
