The photo above shows a close-up of the flower
head of alsike clover as seen along Road #23 at the Mt. Adams Viewpoint (about
one-half mile south of the intersection with Rd #8810).........September
25, 2005. Note the lack of an involucre (cup-like green bracts) at the base
of the flower head. All photos on this page were taken at this location.
A close-up of a flower of alsike clover. Note
the pinkish coloration to the corolla and long, slender calyx lobes (and glabrous
calyx) as well as the long, narrow wings which are slightly longer than the
keel.
A close-up view from above the flower head
showing the calyces and their long, slender lobes.
A close-up of the compound-ternate leaf of
alsike clover. The leaf-like stipules at the base of the leaf are not shown.
Note the rounded tip to each leaflet. The similar
white
clover (
Trifolium repens) has leaflets that are more blunt-tipped
or slightly notched at the tip.
