A basal rosette of leaves of scarlet gilia observed atop Grizzly Peak, Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument......October 14, 2019. A biennial, the leaves overwinter before sending a flower scape up the next growing season. for gardeners in rainy areas, one must protect the basal rosette of leaves over the winter to prevent damping off fungus.
