Broad-leaved Bluebells, Streamside Bluebells: Mertensia ciliata var. ciliata (Synonyms: Mertensia ciliataMertensia ciliata var. stomatechoides) - Tall plants from 40-150 cm high when well-developed. Herbage glabrous and often glaucous. Found from central Oregon east to western Montana, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico and south to California.

Long Bluebells, Long-flowered Lungwort, Small Bluebells, Trumpet Bluebells: Mertensia longiflora - Smaller plants, rarely up to 25 cm high when well-developed. Plants with 1-2 stems that are easily detached from the shallow, tuberous root. Basal leaves often lacking. Stem leaves roughly 1.5-4 times longer than wide. Corolla-tube 2-3 times as long as the limb.

Leafy Bluebells, Leafy Lungwort, Oblongleaf Bluebells, Sagebrush Bluebells: Mertensia oblongifolia (Synonyms: Mertensia oblongifolia var. amoena, Mertensia oblongifolia var. nevadensis, Mertensia oblongifolia var. oblongifolia, Mertensia perplexa, Mertensia viridis, Mertensia x umbratilis) - Smaller plants, rarely up to 40 cm high when well-developed. Plants with multiple, clustered stems and not easily detached from the root. Basal leaves present. The stem leaves are 2.5-7 times longer than wide. The corolla tube is mostly 1.3-2 times longer than the limb. Found from central Washington south through central Oregon to northern California and east to central Nevada and northern and western Wyoming.

Herbage various, ranging from hairy with appressed hairs on the upper leaf surfaces to less hairy with glabrous upper leaf surfaces. Stems numerous. Corolla limb 1.2-1.6 times longer than the tube, the limb flared outwards like a funnel. Found from Alaska east to Quebec and Ontario and south to the east of the Cascades to Oregon and then east to western Montana and Idaho.
