are guard cells. Guard cells can expand and contract (via osmosis) and regulate
the amount of gas exchange, and more importantly the loss of water by the leaf.
It is water loss by the leaf which creates a negative pressure (vacuum) which
helps pull more water from the roots to the upper parts of the plant.
