This plant may be found in wetland forests and in riparian areas (along streams or in moist ditches).
The wood is very hard so has been used for tool handles and as cooking sticks. The wood was used on the Oregon Trail as wagon wheel spokes. The bark may be chewed as a laxative and as a tea to treat colds and flu. It is also a favorite of gardeners because of its red bark.
