Mammals/Insectivore Family


Habitat:

Moist forests, meadows, marshes, and streamsides.


Traits:

1. Long, mouse-like body. Several species of shrews are the smallest mammals of North America.

2. Pointed, furry nose.

3. Thin, fairly long, furry tail.

4. Small eyes. Ears very small.

5. Very fierce predator of worms, insects, and slugs. It must eat its weight in food each day.

6. Active all year long & any time of day.

7. Hairs on feet allow some small shrews to "walk" or "run" on the surface of the water!
