Group Name:

Mammals/Pika Family (They are relatives of the rabbit family.)


Habitat:

Rocky slopes near grassy meadows, both in the Columbia River gorge as well as near timberline in the mountains.


Traits:

1. Cute, small (8 inches long), rabbit-like appearance, but with short rounded ears.

2. Gray brown back & lighter belly.

3. Lives between rocks of boulder fields for protection from its predators (mainly weasels, bobcats or lynxes, and eagles).

4. Gathers grass & dries it into hay, then stores hay in a burrow for winter food.

5. Makes an "eep" noise.
