8. Transpiration is a process whereby water molecules evaporate from the cell walls of the spongy mesophyll cells and move out the stomata. This creates low pressure or suction which pulls more water molecules by cohesion (hydrogen bonding between adjacent water molecules) from the xylem. The movement of water molecules by cohesion thus pulls water up the xylem towards the leaf.
