23. The diagram below shows a cross-section through a monocot leaf like corn.

The cell shown by C is a mesophyll cell.

In monocots that are C4 plants, the mesophyll fixes CO2 into a 4 carbon molecule (oxaloacetate) that can be a source of CO2 at times when the stomata must close so that photorespiration does not occur.
