[Review of Ecological Cycles]

36. Two biological consequences of acid precipitation include..........

a) leaching of important nutrients (K+, Ca+2, mg+2, etc.) from the soil, making it less fertile.

b) The needles of conifers are very sensitive to reduced pH. Too much acid precipitation may kill enough leaves to kill the tree outright, or weaken it so it may fall prey to insects.

c) many fish and aquatic macroinvertebrates are sensitive to a reduced pH which denatures proteins and enzymes. When the pH drops too much, they weaken and die.

d) aluminum is leached from the soil and and enters lakes and streams. It is toxic to many fish and invertebrates.
