1. Energy enters the food chain as sunlight via the autotrophs (or geothermal heat via some chemoautotrophs), is passed from trophic level to trophic level, with about 90% lost at each level. Ultimately, all energy has been consumed by the time it reaches the top consumer or saprotrophs. Energy is not cycled over and over again!
