Variation
Because individuals within a population are not all identical,
some are more likely to survive than others.
Some of the variation is due to the environment, like amount
of light or food supply. Other variations are genetic differences which arise
due to mutations within segments of DNA known as genes. Only the variations
which are in the DNA code may be passed on to offspring.
