It is possible for the biomass of the trout and minnows to be so much greater than that of the zooplankton and phytoplankton because a) the trout and minnows are so much larger than the plankton they eat, and b) both types of plankton have much shorter life cycles. They are replaced quickly, so not as many are needed at any given time!
