To prepare for the final cell test:

A) Review all notes & Handouts.

B) Read Textbooks: 5th Edition (Nemo books) pp. 114-123 or 6th Edition pp. 113-122

C) Answer the practice essay questions:

1) Define diffusion and osmosis.

2) Explain passive transport across membranes by simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion.

3) When given examples of 2 solute solutions, be able to identify which solutions might be hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic. Also be able to identify which direction water will flow.

4) Explain the role of the various protein pumps and ATP in active transport across membranes. (In other words, be able to describe how each of the following work in some detail: the Proton Pump, Sodium-Potassium Pump, and Cotransport.)

5) Identify how the following are similar or different: Phagocytosis, Pinocytosis and Exocytosis.

6) Identify which of the following are examples of active or passive transport, and which require ATP energy and which move materials from high to low concentration, and which move materials from low to high concentration: diffusion, osmosis, facilitated diffusion, phagocytosis, pinocytosis, exocytosis, proton pump, sodium-potassium pump and cotransport.

7) Describe how vessicles carry materials from the ER to the Golgi Apparatus and then out of the cell by exocytosis. ([Online Animation] )

8) Describe how the fluidity of the membrane allows it to change shape, break and re-form during endocytosis and exocytosis. [See end of this Online Animation]
