9. Chemiosmosis
is the process by which ATP is generate in mitochondria and chloroplasts.
Electrons obtained by oxidizing glucose during glycolysis or the Krebs Cycle
are cycled through the electron transport chain.
Energy from the electrons is released
and used to drive proton pumps which pump hydrogen ions to the outer compartment.
This creates an imbalance in charge across the cristae membrane. As the hydrogen
ions move back through the cristae, their movement drives the syntesis of more
ATP.
