22. In the diagram below, if oxygen is not present in the muscle cell, the NADH + H+ that are created go to the lactate fermentation reactions in the cytoplasm. The NADH donates its electron and hydrogens to pyruvate which then becomes lacate.

This reforms more NAD+ which diffuses back to glycolysis at the top of the diagram where it can pick up more electrons and hydrogens, thus keeping glycolysis going and allowing the cell access to at least some ATP!
