21. In the diagram below, if oxygen is present, the NADH + H+ that are created diffuse to the mitochondria where they give their energized electrons to the electron acceptors in the cristae. As the electrons migrate through the electron transport chain, the energy in the electrons is used to create many ATP!

After losing its electrons and hydrogen at the cristae, NAD+ returns to the cytoplasm (or Krebs Cycle) where it can pick up more electrons and hydrogens to keep respiration going!
