23. At step C the electron transport
chain cycles the energized electrons through a series of electron acceptors.
The electrons power proton pumps which use active transport to move protons
(hydrogen ions) into the internal thylakoid space. The protons then move back
out of the thylakoids through special "gates" which provide power
to synthesize ATP.
