12. Paper chromatography works when the solvent moves up the
paper and dissolves the spot of pigment.
The different pigments are carried by the solvent up the paper.
The different pigments each have a different mass, with the
lighter pigments moving faster than the heavier.
After some distance, the lighter pigments move far enough from
the heavier ones so that they become separated.
