27. Two advantages of genetic screening include .........

a) fewer children with genetic diseases are born. Parents who carry an allele for a genetic disease can choose not to have a child, or choose not to mate with someone who carries the allele.

b) the frequency of genetic disease alleles could be reduced. Couples who are carriers of the disease can either choose not to have children, or can choose to use in vitro fertilization (IVF) where the embryos are screened to make sure the disease allele is not present in the embryo before implantation.

c) genetic diseases can be found and treated more effectively. The screening process can identify those at risk and when treatment strategies are developed, these can be administrated to those who have the allele of the genetic disease, thus reducing or alleviating all the symptoms of the disease.
