a) the virus infects a type of lymphocyte (T cells) that plays a vital role in antibody production.

b) As the T cells are destroyed over a period of years, the ability to produce antibodies becomes reduced.

c) When antibody production is so incapacitated, the immune system ceases to function effectively. The body now becomes vulnerable to pathogens that normally would be controlled easily.
