Digestive System Objectives

Students will need to demonstrate understanding of the following objectives while preparing for the upcoming exam:

1. Explain why digestion of large food molecules is needed.

2. Explain why enzymes are needed to aid the digestive process.

3. State the source, substrate, products and optimum pH conditions for the following enzymes: 1 type of amylase, one protease and one lipase.

4. Draw a simple diagram of the digestive system. Label the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, anus, liver, gall bladder and pancreas.

5. Outline the functions of the stomach , small intestine and large intestine.

6. Distinguish between the terms absorption and assimilation.

7. Explain how the structure of the villus in the small intestine is related to its role in the absorption of the end products of digestion.
