MULE DEER.

JESSE SIEVERTSEN.

I chose to do my animal project on the Mule Deer because I figured that it would be one of the easiest animals to find information on plus it was one of the more common animals in the United States.

The most common name of my animal is the Mule deer but most refer to it as just a deer or a Black-tailed deer. The sizes of the Mule Deer vary but most are around this size, females between 100 and a 150 pounds and the males between 125 and 400 pounds. They stand between 3 feet and 3 and a half feet at head height. The way you can distinguish this deer from the other ones would be by the way it looks because it has a black tail, a lot of brown, black, and even some grey. They also have more of a white color in the winter with no antlers. They donŐt eat much meat but they feed mostly on shrubs and on twigs. They are found mostly in the Western states in non heavily populated areas, in the high mountains in the spring and in the lower mountains in the fall.

Their habitats include the coniferous forests, desert shrubs, chaparral, and the grassland with shrubs. They mate a lot like us usually one or two deer at a time when they have their fawns. They are sometimes preyed on by cougars, mt. lions, and even bears. They donŐt know how much the population is decreasing but they figure that it is declining very slowly. This deer is not the type that you would find in your everyday backyard. One other thing to remember is that the Mule deer is not as adaptable as the White-tail deer.
