1a. Mostly grass with some sagebrush.
The 4 pictures above represent a series of events that occur
in the grass and sagebrush lands in central and eastern Oregon and Washington.
Two kinds of populations are involved: grasses of various species and sagebrush
shrubs.

1b. The number of sagebrush shrubs increases as succession
occurs.

1c. A range fire spreads over the landscape, burning everything
above ground. White roots indicate that the roots have survived, so the plant
can regrow next growing season.

1d. The next growing season begins. Grass especially responds
to periodic fires, resprouting quickly after a fire. The sagebrush also has
survived but is slower to regrow after fire.
